MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Due to the impending landfall of Hurricane Irma, Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum has canceled this weekend’s display of the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, and a planned preview of the upcoming Ken Burns and Lynn Novick mini-series “The Vietnam War,” scheduled for September 13.

The museum will close to visitors as a whole upon the initiation of an evacuation.  Staff will spend the next few days preparing all three warships and 28 aircraft for the effects of the storm.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to cancel events like the 9/11 exhibit and the ‘The Vietnam War’ documentary preview,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette.  “However, our first commitments are to the safety of our staff and the community, and the protection of our historic ships and aircraft.  We need to make decisions well in advance of the storm to ensure the full execution of our heavy weather plan.”

Beginning Friday, September 8, all overnight camping reservations aboard the USS Yorktown are suspended.  Those groups have been notified.  For more information about Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum’s storm preparations please visit www.facebook.com/patriotspoint.org, follow @patriots_point on Twitter, or go to www.patriotspoint.org.

Once Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is closed, it will reopen to the public as soon as essential services are restored following Hurricane Irma.
